Amazing to think that Peggy's year of prolific album releases, 1960, is FIFTY years ago! Latin ala Lee, All Aglow Again!, Pretty Eyes, Christmas Carousel and Ole ala Lee! What a set of albums. Last year there was a 3-CD set called Ridin' High containing all Peggy's albums released on Capitol between 1957-59, plus singles and an "exclusive" interview. Can't help wondering if we are in for the same sort of thing with the five 1960 albums. Whatever happens, it's nice to "celebrate" the great albums Peggy had available fifty years ago, and to quote the back of the Latin ala Lee sleeve... Viva La Lee!

Ernie, as someone interested in photography may I offer a different slant on this cover. I have the original album and the emphasis is on the cup and pot while everything else is in soft focus and this makes, for me, a rather 'tasteful' shot. By that stage Peggy had been featured on so many album covers that there could be no doubts about how she looked and anyway there is a happy black and white shot on the back cover taken around the time of Pete Kelly's Blues (black halter neck dress, hooped earings and the short cropped hairstyle that suited her in those days) that has been used a number of times.

Another 'classy' Decca cover is the one used for Miss Wonderful. Printed on that fine grainy paper that was sometimes used on select albums around that time until, I guess, it became too expensive to use.

Gee, I'm feeling all nostalgic.

The too-easy answer is that she looks like hell because she "hasn't slept a wink," feels miserable and doesn't want anyone to see her.

Or, it could be that on her other album cover photos she is establishing eye contact with "you" (you being: the lover she is addressing; the friend with whom she is conversing and in whom she is confiding; the nightclub audience member she is entertaining; or the record buyer she is hoping to seduce into purchasing her latest release) , but here, as she's so tired according to the title track, she can't raise her head high enough to face anyone; she can barely keep her eyelids open as she gazes absently at the tabletop and her lone companion, her coffee cup, and mulls over her innermost thoughts.

More likely, though, there was a push to issue the new recording as quickly as possible and there was no time to schedule a photo shoot.

If these ideas don't seem likely to you, please excuse the rambling; I've had too much caffeine today.

I think you're right about the "sensationalist" aspect of the program, which was understandably edited to emphasize a certain kind of drama. Jerry Leiber (and Mike Stoller) remain huge fans of Peggy Lee, and she was a fan of theirs as well. It's just not much of a story to talk about those times when everyone and everything was in accord.

To put this in additional perspective, L&S refer to their partnership as "the longest running argument in show business." Conflict can be a vital — if difficult — part of the creative process, signifying an unwillingness to settle for less than the best of what either you or your collaborators can give. Peg was never one to settle, and while she may have paid a personal price for this, I think her recorded legacy amply demonstrates the unique rewards she reaped. When you get two or more strong personalities together, none of whom is prone to settling, you stand a good chance of getting fireworks — with all their brilliant beauty, and all their tendency to blow off fingers.

I don't think PL liked him by the sounds of it, so maybe they just weren't suited! Still I can't expect everyone to like PL's way with a song. I liked hearing Peter Richmond's views even if they might not have been what we would have preferred to hear, i.e. that everyone who worked with PL adored her and couldn't wait to sing her praises. I think we have to accept that successful entertainers can be hard work! On the other hand, we didn't hear "nice" stories like the time Peggy was so pleased with her BBC 2 TV show "Peggy Lee Entertains" recorded in Birmingham, UK, that she bought everyone on the set a barrel of beer. For every "bad" story I expect there's a good one. She was only human after all. As for the plastic surgery stories, they may well have been true, and would have explained her appearance in later years, but PL used to say she'd suffered a stroke. I think the documentary seemed to suggest PL would "conveniently" have an illness, whereas she was really having more plastic surgery done. Her family must know the truth, likewise with the alleged hypochondria. It does make one wonder how much of the "bad" stories will find their way in the proposed biopic....

Hi all,

Thanks David, for the link. I enjoyed the program.

As for Peggy being "difficult" I would think that's what she would have to be. Certainly in her time and age it was a man's world. I imagine it was hard to get things done her way at many occasions. Without her having a strong personality would there be a Peggy Lee?

I always imagined her to be strong. Her own book was a bit of a disappointment for me because for me she came across as very insecure. That was possibly part of the story but probably not all of it. Peter Richmond's book set things straight for me in that respect.

And with the movie coming... I wonder with what facts and fiction we will have to deal with. And what the soundtrack will be like...

Greetings,

Thank you for posting this link! The salute was so worthwhile!

It was a special treat to hear "Miss Brown To You," of course; should we be optimistic that this and other archival treasures will one day be released?

Also it was fascinating to hear Peggy, Holly and Stella's comments; the memories of the "Elmer's Tune" and "The Man I Love" recording sessions, in particular, were startlingly clear, in that so much time had elapsed between the actual events and the taping of the recollections. Too, the observations about Peggy's film career were illuminating.

Always there are mysteries and unanswered questions, no matter how many anecdotes and opinions are included in discussions of Peggy and her career, however, and that is as it should be. The focus should be on the wondrous, unexplainable intangibility of her artistry; it is what makes her so compelling and what keeps us hungering for more.

Hi Christian!

If they had sang a song together in any show I think it had been good. Peggy Lee were guest in many of the other great singer's TV shows. She sang with Judy Garland, Eydie Gormé, Ella Fitzgerald, Jo Stafford, Dinah Shore, Lena Horne, Julie Andrews etc. All these ladies also worked with dancing, movies, theater and TV shows, and it was easy for them to work together. I don't know if Anita O'Day had these interests.

I think a female singer has easier to sing together with a male singer. The female nature say... "I must be better than her". Two male singer sings easier together. The male nature say: "I'm the best!"

Thanks David for posting the link to the show. I just listened to the show and I did enjoy it. I must admit that I'm fascinated with Peggy's life story and I keep wondering about the stories that Peggy was difficult to work with and her bad temper in later years etc. We all know what a genius she was and I believe that overall Peggy Lee was a very good person. But maybe she became too much Miss Peggy Lee and in some tragic way had to give up a lot in her personal life. As getting older it's more and more difficult to deal with, I guess, since it happened to some other talented stars and unique personalities. It's an interesting aspect to Peggy Lee's life and awesome career. Maybe someday the family will tell the truth about Peggy and her later years. All this gossip and rumours add up tho the mystery around the persona Miss Peggy Lee. But I can imagine that it belongs to Peggy's personal life and that the story will never be told. More important after all is her unique talent. What is your opinion about this subject?

Well, it was good to have another BBC tribute to Peggy. Last night, she was the subject of "Blonde to Blonde" on BBC Radio 2. Difficult to summarize the work of an artist of the magnitude... and endurance... of Peggy, in an hour's programme, but this was the aim, and I really looked forward to settling down to listen and enjoy! The caption to the programme read "One of the most influential jazz singers of the 20th century ". How true! Peggy continues to be a popular play for radio 2.

This programme, though, was a little different to previous tributes, inasmuch as it focused more on Norma Egstrom, Peggy Lee, and Miss Peggy Lee the person... as she was to become, rather than a critique of her musical genius.

The first 40 minutes made for great listening, and included parts of an interview with Holly, explaining what a great cook her Grandma was... even while on tour. Interviews were interspersed, of course, with Peggy's hit records in chronological order. I never fail to be gob-smacked at the true beauty of Peggy's voice on "Seashells"... and a track was duly played... while, I think, the audience at home all held their breath to hear!

It was confusing, though, and rather disappointing, I think, to hear Peter Richmond being interviewed, as he seemed to focus on anything negative, suggesting Peggy was a hypochondriac, addicted to plastic surgery from her 30's, prone to temper tantrums and impossible to work with, and whose private life was "chaos". Perhaps it was intended to give a balanced overview, but it seemed altogether unnecessary and factually rather dubious. Perhaps the crux of the matter was to indicate that Peggy was very much the perfectionist, who needed, more and more, to have control of things... particularly as she got older... perhaps frustrated by her own failing health.

At the end of the programme, "Can't Think Straight " was played, and Gilbert O'Sullivan was interviewed, which lightened the mood again. He told us that when he performs the song today, he still has Peggy singing her part, projected onto a screen behind him.

Overall, an interesting programme, but one that again goes wide of the mark. The last BBC tribute, was titled "Jazz A La Lee ". This was also an interesting programme, but despite the title, focused on everything except Peggy's jazz recordings!

Hi Cristian,

According to a person who knew her during her later years, Anita said that she and Peggy had been good friends for some time in the past, but they had had "a falling out" and afterwards their friendship permanently stopped. In her autobiography, Anita doesn't mention any friendship but she does make a couple of comments about Peggy's singing.

About the Benny Goodman anecdote, no, it is not exactly true. Here is how Anita tells the story in her book:

Quote:
Later that year, Benny Goodman, "The King of Swing," was playing the Chicago Theater. Somebody heard he was looking for a girl singer and I hurried over to audition.

When my turn came, I handed this nothing song they'd assigned me to the audition pianist. He played the intro and I took off. During my months at the Off-Beat [nightclub], I'd learned a lot. I paid my respects to the melody to make sure I was keeping in touch with my listeners, then I began to play around with the chord structure and the beat, returning to a bit of the melody at the end.

Benny jumped up, obviously annoyed. "What was that? You didn't sing the melody."

"I don't sing the melody on songs like this one," I informed him. "Everybody already knows the melody."

"In my band, the girl singer sings the melody," he said.

It was his band. I couldn't argue. I didn't say anything. I just turned on my heel and walked out.

The next girl who auditioned I think was Helen Forrest, who had a warm, musical voice and got the gig. I wasn't devastated. Benny and I weren't meant for one another, musically speaking. He wanted me to sing the melody and I don't always feel that.

This audition happened before Anita went on to become famous with the bands of Gene Krupa and Stan Kenton.

Helen Forrest was the singer who preceded Peggy in the role of canary with Goodman's orchestra.

As Jarl wrote, after Anita became famous, she did sing with Goodman, during that European tour. One or more of her concert numbers with Goodman (I forgot how many exactly) have been out on LP and CD. I too am a big fan of Anita; her take on "Four Brothers" is definitely among my top numbers by her.

Thanks, as always, Paul B, for keeping us informed; I wasn't aware of this one. Yeah, a public domain label. At least they added a fair number of bonus tracks -- interesting ones, I might add. But since all those tracks are already available in legitimate CDs, I'll pass.

It would be nice if one day Peggy's entire Decca output were to be released in just one boxed set with pristine sound quality, don't you think?

I have never bought any LPTime CDs, except for one that I purchased used. (They are too expensive for my budget, and if I were to try to order just one, I probably wouldn't resist the temptation of getting 8 or 9 more.) But I do agree that the rarer album offerings are worth picking up. Who else would think of issuing artists as obscure as Dolores Hawkins, Joyce Carr, or Marcy Lutes?

Not that the artistry is the series' raison d'etre, mind you. You can't help but laugh when you look at their catalogue. The choices are apparently made on the basis of how much of a cheesecake the photos on the covers are -- presumably because there is market for this material among male Japanese collectors. If you have never seen their catalogue, take a look at the 5 pages advertised here:

Hallo Christian!

I also like Anita O'Day's song very much. She is like Peggy Lee a very good singer. But if I must select between Peggy Lee and Anita O'Day I also had selected Peggy. Peggy Lee's voice is more colourfull, softly, variable. Peggy had always more feeling for the songs, than many of the other great singing stars. Anita O'Day's voice is harder for Goodman's swing music. In 1958 Benny Goodman came to Stockholm with Anita O'Day as singer. All was very good but I remember that some of the songs had been better if Peggy Lee had sang them. Anita O'Day had a very great song "Four Brother's" as she sang with Woody Herman and that song is very great and no one can sing it better. That song was made for her. Peggy Lee was the best and the greatest of all white female singers. Benny Goodman had feeling for what was the best for his music and herefor he selected Peggy Lee. I know that Glenn Miller also was interested of Peggy Lee at the same time.

Best wishes to you all!

Just to let you all know my friends of a new Peggy mini-LP CD of "The Fabulous Peggy Lee". I have always loved the cover of this album, originally issued on Decca.

This has already been issued on mini-LP CD format in Japan once before. However, I thought I would mention this latest re-issue (LPT-1125) on the LPTime label, as it also contains 8 bonus tracks, as follows: Baubles, bangles and beads / He needs me/ I never knew / Apples, peaches and cherries / That's what a woman is for / Never mind / Where can I go without you? / I don't know enough about you

For those not aware of the LPTime label, these are expensive imports which I believe are semi-bootleg. They originate in Europe (Spain) and are aimed squarely at the Japanese market (they even come with their own version of the OBI strip). However, they are stocked by HMV Japan....
