Amazing to think that Peggy's year of prolific album releases, 1960, is FIFTY years ago! Latin ala Lee, All Aglow Again!, Pretty Eyes, Christmas Carousel and Ole ala Lee! What a set of albums. Last year there was a 3-CD set called Ridin' High containing all Peggy's albums released on Capitol between 1957-59, plus singles and an "exclusive" interview. Can't help wondering if we are in for the same sort of thing with the five 1960 albums. Whatever happens, it's nice to "celebrate" the great albums Peggy had available fifty years ago, and to quote the back of the Latin ala Lee sleeve... Viva La Lee!

Just to let you all know my friends of a new Peggy mini-LP CD of "The Fabulous Peggy Lee". I have always loved the cover of this album, originally issued on Decca.

This has already been issued on mini-LP CD format in Japan once before. However, I thought I would mention this latest re-issue (LPT-1125) on the LPTime label, as it also contains 8 bonus tracks, as follows: Baubles, bangles and beads / He needs me/ I never knew / Apples, peaches and cherries / That's what a woman is for / Never mind / Where can I go without you? / I don't know enough about you

For those not aware of the LPTime label, these are expensive imports which I believe are semi-bootleg. They originate in Europe (Spain) and are aimed squarely at the Japanese market (they even come with their own version of the OBI strip). However, they are stocked by HMV Japan....

I read once that when Benny Goodman was looking for a singer for his band, he rejected Anita and choose Peggy... and then Anita joined Krupa's band when he left Goodman's... so I wonder if Peggy and Anita were friends, and if there’s any video of both of them singing together?
Amazon lists two new CD releases -- Why Dont You Do Right -- Selected Recordings (sic) and Fever (The Unforgettable Peggy Lee) -- and both have what appears to be a brand new Peggy Lee song: Ma?

However, it's nothing to get excited about. If you listen to the previews, each proves to be Manana.

Apparently, the budget-priced ($10.98) CDs were issued by Setco on July 6, 2010, and while each features a good selection of Peggy Lee classics, I can't help but be disturbed by the schlocky nature of these presumably unauthorized releases. As we all know, Peggy Lee was a perfectionist, and these CDs seem to be second-rate items, judging by the covers. Perhaps the sound quality is sloppy, too.

Like everyone here, I look forward to new releases of Peggy Lee's recordings, but these aren't exactly what we've been waiting for, and in this instance, I hope the items don't sell, as they seem to promise a poorly packaged introduction to her and to her recordings.

To my knowledge, Miss Lee never sang Arthur Hamilton's "Cry Me a River." I always wondered why and why Miss Lee wasn't given the song in the first instance. It seems that at about the same time Julie London recorded "Cry Me a River," Miss Lee was recording Mr. Hamilton's "Sing a Rainbow." The original liner notes to "Julie Is Her Name" indicate that Mr. Hamilton was Miss London's "childhood friend" and that he wrote "Cry Me a River" especially for her. Perhaps the explanation is that simple. Does anyone know?

Hey folks,

I would like to let you know about my new show, The Peggy Lee Songbook, which will debut Sunday, July 25 (8:30 pm) at Feinstein's at Loews Regency (540 Park Avenue (at 61st St.)New York, NY 10021--212-339-4095).

Grammy-award-winning pianist Bill Cunliffe will be joining me in celebrating the songwriting talents of Peggy Lee. This is not a typical tribute show--it focuses on the creative spirit of Peggy and is composed totally of songs she wrote herself (collaborating with the likes of Ellington, Arlen, Quincy Jones, John Chiodini, Victor Young, Dave Barbour, etc.) I am pleased to be among those collaborators--Peggy's estate granted me permission to contribute music to an un-set poem she published privately, and our song, "Burn It Slow" was born, the newest in Lee's Songbook. For information see my website, www.tishoney.com. We are currently the only Peggy Lee show endorsed and supported by The Peggy Lee Foundation and Peggy Lee Enterprises for the purposes of spreading the word about her songwriting genius. Please join us in our efforts to fill the room for this special event and thank you for your support!

Yours,

Now that Toshiba/EMI has done such a great job reissuing all 30 Julie London albums, I wonder and hope that they will give Peggy the same royal treatment.

The sound quality on the Julies is much better then on the earlier EMI UK reissues. Let's hope Peggy will be next. In fact I think she should have been first.

Mr. N was asking in another thread about CDs for beginners. In addition to making recommendations, it would be a good idea to point out which CDs are best to avoid, due to poor sound quality or to any other significant problem.

So, any recommended or not-recommended CDs?

Also, a question to Mr. N: which Peggy Lee CDs do you already own?
We know about Black Coffee, There'll Be Another Spring: The Peggy Lee Songbook, The Singles Collection ... Others?

I received my "There'll Be Another Spring" CD just a few days ago and I simply can't stop listening to it. First I thought that Peggy's voice sounded a bit tiny and weak. This was probably because of her age when recording this album, however, she sounds very emotional and charming on this record. This album is so versatile with all its ballads, that partially remind me of Barbra Streisand, and all the jazzy uptempo songs. She apparently put much of her soul in it. It's going to be one of my favourite albums, I'm sure! So what was your first impression when you got this album and how do you feel about it now?

I was wondering whether Margaret Whiting is still alive. Did Peggy ever cross paths with her? I read, some time ago, that Margaret was going with a guy much younger than she. I think that makes her an "original" cougar!

Hope all is well with all of you.

Last week on my post "If Dreams Come True" I waxed lyrical (again!) about Peggy's Leiber & Stoller recordings and now this week to my delight the esteemed Russell Davies, on his regular BBC Radio2 prog tells us that he is just back from the USA where he had been compiling some progs. He talked with the composers and, if I understand him correctly, there will be an upcoming hour long documentary about Peggy, Mike and Jerry. Can't wait!

He also played two very contrasting recordings in "I've Got Them Feelin' Too Good Today Blues" and "A Brown Bird Singing".

Lately I have been enjoying the John Pizzarelli/George Shearing disc The Rare Delight Of You. However, on If Dreams Come True, George, by using a similar arrangement in the instrumental part to that he used for Peggy's Beauty And The Beat album evokes so strongly that older recording that Peggy's vocal takes over in my mind and heart and won't be erased.

I have long loved B&TB (both versions) and so many playings over time were bound to create this effect but it also brings to mind a quote mentioned by Peter Stoller in his wonderful notes for Peggy Lee Sings Leiber And Stoller when referring to Peg's death he says that noted jazz critic Nat Hentoff said "you could hear her voice after it stopped".

In no way is this meant to take away from John's attractive vocal and indeed I highly recommend his disc.

Incidentally, I never cease to be surprised at the amazing subtleties I find in every area of that stunning Leiber & Stoller album each time I play it. Truly a landmark recording!

A footnote about the artwork for The Rare Delight Of You. I have quite good eyesight, but trying to read tiny black print on a dark blue background is a real turn-off when attempting to read info about composers or personnel (was it our friend Bob Wallace who touched on this in another thread?). For a long time now I have been irritated by the fashion in the artworld, particularly for movie posters or newspaper advertising, where you might be able to read who the principal actors are but if you try to read about supporting players etc you find the print becomes so squeezed and elongated that you wonder what the point is and give up. I guess, like the never-ending and barely readable end credits for movies on TV, there may be a legal requirement, but boy, is it boring.

Enough! I am now rambling and becoming a bore myself!

Peggy was born in Jamestown, ND. My parents grew up in that area, as the children or grandchildren of immigrants from Sweden, Norway, Germany and Canada. My great-grandmother was fortunate to be able to help Peggy. When Peggy couldn't afford the white gloves she felt were required for her to go on an audition, Grandma bought them for her. Grandma saw something in Peggy that made her want to help. Sadly, the memories that have been handed down in my family are of hurt feelings. Grandma always said that Peggy never even thanked her. Grandma never wanted anything in return for her help, but she would have been happy to know that she was appreciated. I love Peggy. I will continue to pass down the story of how Grandma supported Peggy's dream before it was reality.

Hi everyone,

I thought that I must let you know how it is that Peggy keeps cropping up, on a very regular basis, in the UK. She is a regular on several radio programmes, on both the BBC and independent stations, and clearly appeals to a really wide variety of listeners. She's almost a genre of her own!

A few weeks ago, "Suggs", the lead singer from the 80's group "Madness" was being interviewed. I sat listening and enjoying his choice of records, which was mostly contemporary and rock. At the end of the programme, he announced that he'd kept the best for last... and introduced Peggy singing "Is That All There Is". It reminded me, again, of how timeless Peggy is, and the breadth of material she covered, which just seems to appeal to so many.

Today, it was the turn of Mick Jagger. I missed quite a bit of the programme, but I was just thrilled to bits, when he also announced his last record was Peggy... again singing "Is That All There Is"! What a following she has!

Best wishes to all,
