Does anyone know the source of a version of 'I Get a Kick Out of You' that is not the Capitol Transcriptions recording or World Program Service recording? The only other extant version I know of is from a Chesterfield Supper Club broadcast of 1949. The mystery recording is of duration 2:30. It has a small group accompaniment and the lyrics are true to Cole Porter's in that Peggy does not want to sniff cocaine. It is probably from the late 1940s and possibly recorded at Capitol. She was singing the song in her live performances in 1949.

In the Capitol Transcriptions recording she doesn't want to take a trip on a train, and in the World version she doesn't want to sniff perfume from Spain. Strange lyric changes, but that's another subject. The Supper Club version (duration 2:01) has orchestral accompaniment and she doesn't want to sniff cocaine.

YouTube has a new clip featuring Peggy Lee's full 1954 appearance at the Hollywood Bowl:

[www.youtube.com]

The section in which she sings "From This Moment On" has been regularly available there, but the spoken intro and chatter at the end hasn't. "Love, You Didn't Do Right by Mr" might have been in YouTube before, but if so, that must have been years ago.

When I said that the clip shows Peggy's full appearance in the show, I lied. She comes back for the finale, to sing a chorus or two (so do the episode's other guests).

"About Mrs. Leslie": Peggy Lee at the movies (3 replies)

Do you own a copy of the 1954 movie About Mrs. Leslie? I have been patiently waiting to either get a copy of its VHS version or be treated to a DVD release. So far, my patience hasn't paid off. I know of one online site that sells a homemade DVD version, or that professes to do so, but I'm wary of commercial sites with which I'm not familiar.

In any case, Peggy Lee is heard in the soundtrack of this love story, starring Shirley Booth and Robert Ryan. Peggy sings "I Love You So," a composition that she co-wrote with Victor Young. I would like to know if this song is entirely different from "Love You So," a number that she recorded for Decca a few months before the movie's debut. (It should be different: in addition to the missing pronoun, the Decca title is not credited to Lee and Young. But one never knows; the credit could be wrong, and the pronoun is a very minor divergence.)

I know for certain that Peggy was heard in the original version of the movie. I make this point because sometimes original theatrical releases are edited for TV showing, as we have mentioned here in relation to the 1953 remake of The Jazz Singer.

Hello Everyone,

After receiving some comments about it being time to update peggylee.com, we went ahead and hired Wilshire IT to design a new look for us. I wanted to give you all a little warning so you weren't too shocked. All of the material that is on the current website is going to be on the new website, and the bulletin board will work the same. The only thing that we are letting go of is the peach background, but you'll see touches of peach throughout the website (I have learned that a little peach goes a long way). We've added more photos to the galleries and have tried to make things easier to navigate. It's also smartphone and iPad friendly. I hope you like the new look! If anything doesn't work the way it should, please let me know. We should be launching it sometime soon.

Hope all is well with you!

Best,

Radio 2's wonderful Russell Davies paid tribute last Sunday 10 March with Peggy Lee singing Say It from the truly amazing Peggy Lee Sings Leiber and Stoller (again many thanks for this, Peter). It is good that the BBC has a copy of this limited edition which was unavailable in the UK when launched. It now is rare and available on Amazon UK at £150 - wow!

This was followed with some other tunes and a few anecdotes which lasted just over 10 minutes. This can be heard at around 30 minutes into the show on the BBC iPlayer and the link is:
I listened on internet to a lot of versions and asked myself this questions. Although there are a lot of nice covers, I still prefer Peggy her own recording the most (of course), but one of my favourite versions is by Queen Latifah. What are your favourite versions by other artists?

Do you happen to have the album Basin Street East Presents Miss Peggy Lee on Japanese CD? I'm trying to corroborate (or refute) two details about it. Since I don't have it, here's hoping that you do:

1. It doesn't contain the bonus track "Call Me Darling."

2. It was released in 1993 (in other words, before the USA CD, which came out in 1995).

I've just got back from a really excellent evening seeing Stacy Sullivan in London, which I just felt I should share with you.

Sometime ago I went to see a Peggy Lee tribute artist, and was sadly disappointed. Enough said about that experience... so I wasn't sure what to expect when I booked to see Stacy, apart from being aware of her very good reviews.

What a terrific evening it turned out to be! Far from being a Peggy Lee impersonator, Stacy is a masterful singer in her own right, who uses her skills to subtly present the spirit of Peggy in very much her own style. She has opted to sing the less usual songs from Peggy's catalogue, which have been cleverly arranged to sound like a fresh-take... much as Peggy herself used to do, and present them in a way to give a sketch of Peggy's career. It was great to hear "The Folks Back Home", which Peggy wrote about her home in North Dakota. It's a very accomplished mix of singing and acting. Watching her, she even seemed to look like Peggy... the smile, the pout, the backward glance, without making any overt attempt to copy her.

She's supported by Steve Doyle on bass and Jon Weber on piano, who are both superb musicians and work so well as a team. I was really delighted to meet the three of them after the show.

I can thoroughly recommend seeing Stacy! I'm now enjoying her CD, which is a great reminder of a great evening.

Best wishes to all,

Some of you may already know about this but for those of you outwith Britain there is a BBC Radio4 prog to be transmitted on Tuesday 5th Feb under the series 'Soul Music' lasting for half an hour and concentrating on "Is That All There Is". According to the Radio Times prog info there is a contribution from Mike Stoller and the place in history of the Randy Newman arrangement.

I don't imagine that we long-time Peggy fans will learn much that we don't already know but what intrigues me is the blurb for the prog in Radio Times listings where it states; "The magic of the record is in its ability to make lacerating pessimism inspiring, a point made in an extraordinary interlude featuring the testimony of a paediatric oncologist."

The prog will be repeated again on Saturday 9th Feb but we in Britain have the luxury of being able to listen again anytime via 'Listen Again' for up to a week after transmission.

I would like a CD copy of the original Christmas Carousel song. Peggy Lee's 1961(?) Christmas Carousel album cover was red and had a picture of her on it and a small carousel. Amazon has it but i dont want to pay $75.00 for it. Does anyone else know where i can get the original Chrismas Carousel direct from a seller? Or how about the CD listed on this forum store. They have a CD called "Christmas with Peggy Lee" and it has Christmas Carousel - but is it the ORIGINAL recording? Or is it a re-recording made years later? I want the original?

Merry Christmas Peggy fans,

I'm listening to Peggy's Mink Jazz CD - the one with the previously unreleased tracks. This has to be one of her best. I like her recording of Where Can I Go Without You on this release better than the Decca one. My Silent Love, Days Of Wine And Roses, Close Your Eyes - all wonderful.

Two of the previously unreleased ones, Please Don't Rush Me and My Little Boat are so Peggy, therefore so wonderful, but there is a misstep in I Didn't Find Love. Just wondering if anyone has found some songs they didn't like on a Peggy recording. For me, there are a few, The Seventh Son being one I listened to earlier today.

This has been a Peggy day. I find that when I have housecleaning to do, she is very motivating - at least she makes it more palatable.

Merry Christmas to all,

Watching the YouTube Bing Crosby show clip showing Peggy Lee's interpretations of What Is A Woman and Seems Like Old Times, I thought I'd discovered another Peggy Lee holiday gem, a perfect inclusion for the next iteration of her Christmas Carousel album.

In her brief, but punchy version of Seems Like Old Times, Peggy sings these choruses:

Seems like old times, being here together;
Just like old times, love this winter weather;
And it's still a thrill just to be around you;
Still a thrill, the way it was the day I found you...

Seems like old times, birthday cakes and flowers;
Just like old times, I could sing for hours;
And dreams do come true, now that I'm here with you ;
Yes it seems like old times...

It seems like old times, this is something groovy;
Yes, like old times, better than a movie;
And dreams do come true, now that I'm here with you;
Seems like old times – like I've never been away;
Old times – how are you today;
'Cause it seems like, like the good old times...

Intrigued, I listened to another version of the song, which have the following choruses, as written by Carmen Lombardo and John Jacob Loeb and recorded by Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians November 15, 1945:

Seems like old times, having you to walk with;
Seems like old times, having you to talk with;
And it's still a thrill just to have my arms around you;
Still the thrill that it was the day I found you...

Seems like old times, dinner dates and flowers;
Just like old times staying up for hours;
Making dreams come true doing things we used to do;
Seems like old times being here with you...

According to Wikopedia, the song Seems Like Old Times was recorded by both Joe Loss and His Orchestra, with a Sam Brown vocal, and by Vaughn Monroe in 1946 and by Ella Fitzgerald in 1968. In addition, the song was used by Arthur Godfrey as a theme song for his radio show and was performed by Diane Keaton in Annie Hall in 1977.

So, my first question is this: Did Peggy Lee pen new lyrics for her appearance on this show, or did someone else involved with the production write them, or did some other singer/lyricist/radio or television scripter adapt the original words at an earlier time?

My second question is: Did this Bing Crosby television show air during the winter, or was the mention of "winter weather" simply a sly allusion to Peggy's recording with "Art London" and Benny Goodman?

And my final question for the moment is: Which Peggy Lee songs are you listening to now, in anticipation of the holidays?
