ivan, great pictures. as per the seminal "best of peggy lee" gatefold album i have a mono mca2 4029 with no small inside pictures as a "feverish" teenager i cut and pasted these pictures from an earlier copy into the new one. my question is which of these editons contained the small pictures and which not. id like to where i got the small pictures. thanks, monty

Kevin, your message made for a very interesting and complex reading. Thanks!

Tracking down the history of this album remains something of a challenge, due to its many reissues domestically and abroad. (Besides those I listed, I imagine that there are others in Europe, Australia and maybe Africa, for which I have not yet found information. I also know of a Japanese gatefold LP with an entirely different front cover, but with the same notes and small photos inside.)

Most of my information about the editions of this particular LP stems from music price guides and internet websites. It is looking more and more like some of that album information is partially incorrect. Hence I'm going to have to do something that I haven't done in quite a few years: visit used record stores. I need to find and pick up the editions of the LP that I don't have, in the hope that close inspection will clarify some matters. (I better hurry, lest the few such stores that still exist completely vanish!)

But let's talk about your copy.

a) Since you bought the album in 1971/1972

and

b) since the Decca-MCA merger happened in 1962, and your record shows the MCA rainbow label,

we indeed need to arrive at the conclusions that

a) the 1980 copyright is erroneous,

and

b) 1960 is not a possibility, either.

If we were to go for the theory that there is a typo in "1980," the most logical candidates for correct year would then be 1970 (i.e., the 7 was inadvertently replaced with a 7) or 1966 (i.e, a 0 wrongly replacing a 6). Zeros and sixes are digits that can look very similar in typewriters and computers, when the type or font is very small.

Another possibility would be that, if the album copy that you bought was used, someone could have put the vinyl from one edition in another edition's jacket. (i'm offering this merely as a possibility. I haven't thought through what it would entail within the parameters of this discussion.)

In a nutshell, I'm now inclined to believe that the stereo LP, of which you have a copy, was indeed released in 1966 (as actually claimed in one of the sources that I consulted), and that only a mono version was issued in 1960. As I alredy said, I'll have to track down later album editions, and will eventually make corrections as needed.

I am also interested in that 7-7875 id number that you mention. In a couple of weeks, when I will finally regain access to my currently stored LPs, I will check if that number is in my album copies, too.

Thank you, Jarl. I have no plans to join Facebook, but I'll be happy to check and see which covers can be found there.

Thanks again,

Monty, my LPs are currently packed because I'm about to move, but I can tell you from "vivid" memory that the original mono LP has the small photos. The catalogue number of that original mono LP is Dxb 164 (images #1 and #2 in my discographical page).

I know that I own at least one more edition of the LP, but I can't fully remember details. (I think it's just the stereo version, Dxsb 164, and that it also has the pictures, but I truly need to visually corroborate this.)

About the editions that do not contain the small photos, hopefully we will figure this out little by little. As I said in my answer to Kevin, I need to track down copies of all those later editions, because at the present time I am not fully trusting the information that I have gleaned from music guides and internet sites.

Here is yet another vague remembrance, in need of further corroboration: those photos (and maybe more from the same performance) also appeared in a 1960 photo spread published by one of the main music magazines (DownBeat, Melody Maker, Jazz Journal). Black & white. I think they are identified there as being from a Basin Street East performance.

Another photo apparently from the same concert shows up in the booklet of the pink box Miss Peggy Lee.

Ivan -- have just looked through the Capitol period and it is fantastic to see them all in order and to see how much PL changed and adapted to the times. What a lot of hard work but well done and thanks.

Thanks for the very encouraging words, George. It has been a lot of work indeed, but very exciting and thus rewarding for me.

Well, a new page is now ready for viewing. This one is dedicated to Peggy's Capitol compilations:

[peggyleediscography.com]

Next up: Bootleg and Public Domain compilations, which will be the final page of this album covers project. (Page or pages: there are so many PD compilations that I might need to break the material into two or more pages).

Hello Ivan, I hope your move went well. Thanks for the new page, it's a real joy looking at it all! About 16 Greatest Hits, sleeve: 054.85001, LP: 5C 058-85001. Is that what you wanted?

Greetings,
Theo.

Theo, I'm very glad to learn that you are enjoying the new page. It was fun to put together, too! The move went well, aside from the fact that I was without internet for a couple of days. Also, I haven't been able to unpack my LP collection yet... which is one reason why I appreciate your help with the particular query about "16 Greatest Hits." Yes, that's what I wanted; thanks once more!

That link should take you to the discography's newest page. It displays images of bootleg and Public Domain compilations. Nearly 200 of them ...

Guess what? That's the final page of this project. At last!

(I should probably rephrase: it's the last page dedicated to photos of Peggy's albums. It's not the last page of the discography per se. Far from it: I will now start working on additional pages that will list Peggy's numbers from radio, television, theatre, and film. But no more new pages of photos.)

Iván

P.S. If you have trouble viewing the bootleg and Public Domain images, let me know. Since there are so many pictures in one document, I fear that the page could take a while to upload.

Thank you so much, Monty and Ron.

Well, in my last post above I said that I had basically finished with the photo pages, but.... turns out that I hadn't.

A few weeks ago, I finally got my printer's scanner to work. Since then, I've been scanning a lot of images that I had found and photocopied many years ago. Somewhere between 50 and 75 images. Unfortunately, those were paper photocopies, which means that the quality of the scanned images is under par. (But some of the images in question are rare, and in the end I'd rather have something available than nothing at all.)

I'm especially happy about having all 3 different LP front covers of the Decca album Dream Street, and also the 3 photos of Peggy on which those album covers were based. To see those photos and album covers, click on the link below, and go to part V of the page on display:

Two additional comments:

1. If you have bookmarked the Peggy Lee discography for one reason or another,
get rid of the bookmark. The discography is now fuctioning under a different format. The homepage's new address is [www.peggyleediscography.com]

2. Also new to the discography is a new creation by webmaster Steve Albin: a blue bar at the top of each page that allows you to quickly access other pages of the discography. (For instance, if you go to [www.peggyleediscography.com] as I suggested above, and you want to move on from that page to other pages with album cover images, all you have to do is click on "Photos" in the top bar, and then make your choice among the pages listed.)

Now I think I've really completed these photo pages, aside from the occasional addition here and there, in the future. If any of you happen to have better scans of any of the images seen online, and if you don't mind taking some of your time to send me better scans, please do. Thanks!

Hi Ivan,

Thanks for all your recent posts. So nice to hear from you again. It seems that we don't have regular posts lately on the bulletin board and that's a pity. Also many thanks for your great work on the discography.

Richard.

My pleasure, Richard. Not surprisingly, you and I feel the same way: there have been few posts in the last months. Yet the quantity of hits per thread suggests that a fair amount of people visit the board and reads posts. Hopefully there will be more folks posting as Peggy's birthday (and the opening of the Midland Continental Depot Museum and Peggy Lee Exhibit) approaches!

Hallo Iván!

I will look at your page with photos and see what I can do with the photos. Any problems with format, colours and other things are no problems for me. Also I have the most of these records in original and very good quality. The worst thing is to get time to do it as I'm working on many webpages and connections just now. Also I recommend you to add up with Facebook too. Many Peggy Lee things happen there too and most members here are also there.

Very welcome Iván!

Best greetings from Jarl

Hi Arthur,

That's odd, isn't it? I imagine that the reason has something to do with your internet connection, or with your computer ... Then again, you probably have no toruble seeing photos everywhere else in the internet, right?

Hmm. Perhaps the problem is that I have put too many images in a single page, and, as a result, your internet connection is having difficulty downloading the page. Let's experiment.

The following page does not have as many images as some of the other pages. Click on the link and let me know if you can see the page and the images in it:

Ivan,

Thanks for you reply. Using the original link you posted I was unable to see a single picture. I tried to view the photos using my desktop PC, laptop, and Samsung smartphone - result: text but no pictures.

I have now clicked on the new link you've provided and pictures easily viewed all of my machines.

I hope there is something you can do to make the whole site available to me me. I must add that I haven't experienced problems in viewing pictures on any other site before.

Thanks for all your efforts.

Regards

Arthur

Arthur, I'm very happy to learn that the last link worked.

I'd like to ask you if, when you click on that link, the page that shows for you includes a blue bar on top. It is a bar that contains the following uppercase words:

PREFACE
INDEXES
STUDIO SESSIONS
RADIO TRANSCRIPTIONS
MEDIA PERFORMANCES
PHOTOS
MISCELLANEA

If you see those words, click on any of them... For instance, you may click on PHOTOS. If you do, a long list of titles should appear. Click on the first title (Photos: Main Capitol Albums), and let me know if you are seeing a page featuring Capitol album covers.

Hello Ivan,

Thanks for your reply. I followed your instructions and Peggy's Capitol albums can now be seen. When I go back try your original link it is still text and no pictures.

Thanks for your efforts.
