Are there any outside boards where vocalists like Lee and others of her era are discussed?

Hallo Friend!

You have Facebook. Many of the friends here are also there. Also you have Yahoo group Songbirds and some other places on Internet. Fan clubs etc but I think the most of the members are on Facebook like me too.

Very welcome you too!

The sites that Jarl mentioned are the ones I happen to know, too.

Generally speaking, Songbirds is great for anyone interested in jazz and classic pop singers who is not too touchy about his or her favorite singers. The challenge for newcomers at the Songbirds site is that they often feel either put off by the frequency of negative criticism or intimidated by the vast amount of knowlege that regular posters display sometimes. For instance, right now there was a string of less-than-positive comments about Barbra Streisand, as well as fine comments about relatively rare artists such as Belle Barker and Frances Williams. So, any touchy Barbra fan might feel offended, whereas members who have no idea who Barker or Williams were might or might not skip mesages about them.

At the same time, there were enlightening comments about Barbra and other singers -- comments made by a singer who is herself a Songbirds member, Carol Sloane. And YouTube links, helpful if you want to familiarize yourself with some of the singers.

So, you have to take what you like together with what you might not like. The site also boasts a continuous outpour of up-to-date music reviews, culled from all sorts of periodicals and posted by the group's webmaster, David, who is also the webmaster of this Peggy Lee site.

At this point in the history of the Songbirds site, you will only ocassionally see a discussion about Peggy or other well-known singers. (Many years ago, people like me mentioned Peggy so much that there was groaning.) Today, it is more common to find member comments about the aforementioned music reviews, and about less well-known singers.

It's too bad that newcomers tend to feel intimidated. Were those same people bolder, perhaps the list's threads would exhibit a better balance. I do miss discussions about, say, favorite songs and favorite albums -- discussions on which many members used to participate with enthusiasm.

Facebook.

In Facebook, on the other hand, I have caught mostly pointless comments like "I love her" or "when I was little my family used to play her albums." Nothing of substance or of interest to me, the very occasional exception aside. I mean, don't get me wrong: I'm thrilled when I read positive and enthusiastic comments about the singers that I too love, but the commenters' lack of depth and detail does not compel me to get involved any farther than as an "approving" reader. (Then again, maybe I haven't looked in the right Facebook places.)

Thank you for the recommendations. I have now joined "Songbirds", and will take a look at the Facebook groups also.

This is just one of dozens of threads that should fit the bill ~ if you like Nat "King" Cole, Frank, Dean, Peggy, Ella, etc... have a look around
