In celebration of the album’s 60th anniversary, Capitol Records and Universal Music Enterprises (UMe), in conjunction with Peggy Lee Associates, announce a bold new “Big $pender” remix by electronic duo Girl Math, alongside a newly animated visualizer for the original song inspired by its Sweet Charity Broadway origins.
Written by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields for the Broadway musical Sweet Charity, “Big Spender” quickly became one of Peggy Lee’s signature recordings. Recalling a phone conversation with Cy Coleman as cited in her autobiography, Lee said: “The day he had completed writing it for Sweet Charity, he called me from New York and sang me that, among other things, and he had something else in mind for me. I said, ‘But I want “Big Spender,” and he said, “Well, sure, if you want to.’ So he let me sing it six months before the play came out. And you could just feel that it was a hit.”
Six decades later, Girl Math delivers an electrifying reinterpretation of “Big $pender,” marrying Lee’s unmistakable vocal with driving house rhythms, punk attitude, and festival-ready energy while preserving the effortless cool that made the original unforgettable.
