“Peggy Lee was one of America’s most successful and admired vocalists for more than forty years… and of all the traditional singers who have tried their hand at writing songs, she is by far the most successful. With her then husband, Dave Barbour, and later with Cy Coleman, she turned out a number of very effective lyrics.” – Robert Gottlieb and Robert Kimball, Reading Lyrics, Pantheon Books, 2000

Peggy wrote over 270 songs, usually as lyricist but occasionally as the music composer as well. She recorded 109 of her songs for release on record and performed 16 newly written songs (in addition to her hits from past decades) on Broadway in Peg, her 1983 autobiographical musical. Hundreds of other singers have recorded her songs, including such major names in popular music as Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Sammy Davis Jr., Doris Day, Billy Eckstine, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Dean Martin, Bette Midler, Carly Simon, Nina Simone, Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Sarah Vaughan and Dionne Warwick.

In 1999, Peggy was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in a class that also included Bobby Darin (honored posthumously), Bart Howard, Tim Rice and Bruce Springsteen. Here is a gallery of songs she wrote that were published commercially.

If you have sheet music for any other songs Peggy wrote that aren’t included here, please contact us. We’d love to add more songs to this gallery.
