‘I’m a Woman’: Peggy Lee Spells ‘W-O-M-A-N’ on Vintage Capitol Single

January 5, 2021
January 5, 2021

Peggy Lee wasn’t the first to record Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller’s “I’m a Woman,” but when she did, she owned it entirely. A classic example of the writing duo’s smart and sassy narratives, its bold and liberated lyrics depicted a woman who could take care of herself, and of her man, at the same time. “I can rub and scrub ’til this old house is shinin’ like a dime, feed the baby, grease the car, and powder my face at the same time,” she sang. Then: “If you come to me hungry you know I’m gonna fill you full of grits, if it’s lovin’ you’re likin’, I’ll kiss you and give you the shiverin’ fits. ‘Cos I’m a woman, W-O-M-A-N, I’ll say it again!” Even listening from the distance of a Capitol Records 45, you would doubt her at your peril. The Beach Boys, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole and Peggy Lee Receive Animated Treatment for Holiday Hits

December 14, 2020
December 14, 2020

Holly Foster Wells of the Peggy Lee Estate: “‘Happy Holiday’ is one of my favorite Christmas songs of my grandmother’s, not only because of its beautiful message about connecting with loved ones at holiday time, but also because of the joy that I hear in my grandmother’s voice. I can actually hear her smiling when she is singing the lyrics to this beloved Irving Berlin classic. When she recorded this song in 1965, I don’t think she could have ever imagined that, in the year 2020, her timeless recording would inspire a heart-warming animated holiday video that beautifully portrays the importance of love and acceptance, of self and others. She would be so happy and proud, as I am.” [Source: Universal Music press release]

Banu Gibson and Hal Smith Talk Great Vocalists

Singer Banu Gibson: “Not only was Peggy a wonderful singer and a great songwriter, but she was also a savvy businesswoman. Peggy inspired me to work both the artistic and business side of music. There are so many songs I love that Peggy Lee sang, but at the moment I like listening to her singing Cole Porter’s Do I Love You? with George Shearing’s Quintet from a 1959 album called Beauty and the Beat. What a great album title, right? She just stretches out vocally over a swinging rhythm section. She is so effortless you don’t realize what a groove she establishes. She is also so conversational. And it is where she doesn’t take a breath that singers should study.” [Source: Syncopated Times]

Things Only Adults Notice in ‘Lady and the Tramp’

October 1, 2020
October 1, 2020

Famous celebrities acting in animated features is nothing new, and it dates back at least to 1955, when Lady and the Tramp hit theaters. Headlining the cast: Miss Peggy Lee, an extremely popular American singer in the vocal jazz and traditional pop styles in the pre-rock ‘n’ roll era. Lee lent her voice, with which mainstream audiences were extremely familiar in 1955, to the voices of human Darling and the cats Si and Am, and also helped write six songs on the film’s soundtrack. Adults who saw Lady and the Tramp during its initial release must have enjoyed or at least appreciated Lee’s contributions, while grown-ups who watch it now would at least be more familiar than their kids are with the legendary singer of “Fever,” “Mañana,” and “Big Spender.” [Source: Looper]

Missing Jazz in Seattle? Check Out 3 Books About Iconic Female Jazz Musicians to Get Your Fill

October 1, 2020

The great singer Peggy Lee — most famous for her sensual, million-selling 1958 record “Fever” — was not immune to the male chauvinism that saturated the music business then, starting with her days as a star with Benny Goodman in the early 1940s, and it is safe to say that the same chauvinism has prevented her from being recognized as an industry giant comparable to Frank Sinatra or Bing Crosby. Jazz vocalist and teacher Tish Oney’s “Peggy Lee: A Century of Song” tells all about the icon while also offering incisive technical analysis, singer to singer. [Source: Seattle Times]

The Incomparable Miss Peggy Lee

September 30, 2020
September 30, 2020

The incomparable Peggy Lee (1920-2002), American pop and jazz singer, composer, and actress, was born Norma Deloris Egstrom in Jamestown, North Dakota. The grandchild of Swedish and Norwegian immigrants, her depression-era childhood was brutal: The sixth of seven children, her mother died when she was four years old; her beloved father, an alcoholic, remarried an abusive woman less than a year later. As a child, she listened to the radio for escape and inspiration, wrote songs, and sang continuously—for herself, for special occasions like birthday parties, in church choirs, glee-clubs and talent shows.
